Bull runs through neighborhood, charges families

Ranchers called in to lasso beast

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Firefighters took on the role of matadors and cowboys on Monday as they tried to catch a bull running wild through a small neighborhood.

The bull escaped at around 3 a.m. on Monday from a ranch in Rohnert Park.  It wandered around all day, forcing California Highway Patrol troopers to shut down Highway 101 during rush hour as the animal walked on the road.

Once troopers were able to get the bull off of the highway, it ran into a nearby neighborhood, scaring families back into their homes.

Santa Rosa firefighters were called in and given the difficult job of trying to corral the bull.

"He put his head down and came right at us," Neil Nicholson, a Rincon Valley firefighter, told KPIX-TV. "We got him away from all the people who were around. He made another charge at the owners and subsequently knocked one of them down."

Local ranchers were contacted to put an end to the hour and a half ordeal. After the bull knocked down a ranch hand, its owner gave animal control officers permission to put the bull down.
