Businesses in Orlando tourist area call abandoned hotel 'eyesore'

Future of old Venturella Resort and Spa unclear

ORLANDO, Fla. – The sign outside the abandoned building says the luxury styled hotel is opening in 2008, but renovations stopped years ago and the hotel has been in disrepair ever since.

"It's a bit of an eyesore really compared to the rest of the area," Helen Payne, a tourist from England said Wednesday.

The anticipated opening of the Venturella Resort and Spa has become more of a waiting game.

A mock up sketch shows what the hotel would look like, but those plans have been put on hold.

For years now people who pass the abandoned building see graffiti marks on the outside, broken glass windows, boarded up doors and overgrown weeds.

The property was undergoing a $22 million renovation, but it was abandoned half way through the project.

Helen Payne who is visiting Disney with her family from England says she remembers when the dilapidated hotel was open during their last visit over five years ago.

Payne said she was surprised to see how things have changed. "It was quite nice then, quite posh. It's very surprising to see the state its in now," Payne said.

The future of the abandoned building is still unclear. Local businesses say they hope the hotel's image can be turned around quickly.

Local 6 reached out to the contractor of the project but all numbers are now disconnected. He is facing several violations from Orange County Code Enforcement about the property being unsafe and not maintained.
