TAVARES, Fla. - A law enforcement recruit was bitten by an alligator Tuesday morning in Lake County while learning how to approach the animal, officials said.
The incident occurred at the Institute of Public Safety at 12900 Lane Park Cutoff Road in Tavares.
According to Lake County sheriff's Lt. John Herrell, cadets were in a courtyard practicing how to approach alligators when one of the recruits tripped, allowing the gator to clamp down on the cadet's hand.
A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer shot and killed the gator because it would not release the cadet's hand.
The cadet suffered minor injuries.
Herrell said cadets are not affiliated with agencies until after they graduate.
