Car drives into Indian River Lagoon

Suicidal woman taken to hospital, Palm Bay police say

PALM BAY, Fla. – A suicidal woman drove her car off a 40-foot embankment into the Indian River Lagoon on Monday morning, according to police.

The silver two-door coupe plunged into the river shortly after 9:30 a.m. near Dollar General, just south of Turkey Creek in Palm Bay.

"She was southbound on U.S. 1, and she decided she wanted to commit suicide. So she did a U-turn and drove off the bank. It's about a 40-foot drop," Palm Bay police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

No injuries were reported, Martinez said.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was hospitalized and will undergo psychological evaluation, per Florida's Baker Act.

A DUI charge is pending, Martinez said, because the woman told officers she was under the influence.

The incident remains under investigation.

A tow truck removed the vehicle from the river.
