ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A 9-year-old boy was hit by a car while riding his bike Tuesday afternoon in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the driver was in a Chevrolet Sonic on Powers Drive at about 3:50 p.m. when she turned right on a green light to travel onto Balboa Drive and struck a bicyclist who was in the crosswalk.
The boy said a man was in the crosswalk already, which is why he also attempted to cross, according to the report.
The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He was released from the hospital less than two hours later.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that Edwards is a school crossing guard.
The boy's mother, Portia Williams said that her son called to tell her what happened, so she raced to the scene.
Williams said that the crossing guard was just showing up for duty, when she struck the child.
"I'm super grateful that my only child is still here. However, I am pissed that the crossing guard who protects him, hit him," Williams said.
Williams said that her son Anthony turns 9 years old on Wednesday. She said that he typically rides his bike home from school.
"He takes the same route every day, since kindergarten and we haven't had any issues. He knows how to use the button, he knows how to use the crosswalk," Williams said.
Williams also said that Anthony was checked out at the hospital for a minor leg injury, before returning to the scene to speak with troopers.
The crash remains under investigation.
