Cell phone charger blamed for house fire
Charger left on mattress sparks house fire in Palm Bay
A cell phone charger is being blamed for a house fire that caused an estimated $5,000 damage to a home in southwest Palm Bay, firefighters said.
Firefighters said around 5 p.m. Saturday they responded to a home in the 500 block of Olivia Street Southwest after reports of flames in a home came in.
When firefighters arrived they removed a mattress and box spring that had caught fire inside a bedroom, officials said.
Firefighters said they contained the fire to just the bedroom of the home.
Assistant Fire Marshal Ron Bailey responded to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire, officials said.
Firefighters said the investigation revealed electrical issues with the house. It was also learned the occupant of the home had been charging a phone on top of the mattress.
The charger is believed to have sparked the fire that ignited the mattres and there were no injuries as a result of the fire, firefighters said.
