Central Florida lawmaker wants school buses exempt from tolls

State representative calls it a hidden tax on students

ORLANDO, Fla. - A new piece of legislation that resulted from a 13-year-old's class project could exempt school buses from paying tolls in Florida.

State Rep. Linda Stewart held a news conference Monday with Caroline Casola and some of her classmates, who together came up with the idea.

Stewart calls it a hidden tax on students and says school districts would ease the strain on their transportation budget by making buses exempt.

The bill uses the statutory definition of "school bus," and exempts the vehicles from paying tolls on district-related activities.
