LAKELAND, Fla. - A Lakeland middle school student was arrested on suspicion of poisoning his teacher's drink by putting hand sanitizer her water.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the 14-year-old boy, whom Local 6 is not naming because of his age, was arrested on a charge of poisoning water with intent to kill or injure.

Deputies said the boy squirted hand sanitizer into the teacher's cup on Tuesday when she stepped outside the classroom to talk to the Crystal Lake Middle School dean of students about another student.

When the teacher returned to her desk, she took a sip of water and noticed that it had a funny taste, deputies said.  She took the lid off the cup and detected the odor of hand sanitizer, which also sits on her desk, according to deputies.

The teacher went to a hospital after experiencing a headache and stomachache.

Two students told investigators they saw the teen put the hand sanitizer into the water, according to the Sheriff's Office.
