FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Highway Patrol investigators say a 5-year-old playing with a cellphone indirectly led to the deaths of an Ohio couple in a March crash with a sheriff's deputy.
FHP investigators found that the deputy was responding to a 911 call when his patrol car collided with John and Marilyn Steffen's car.
The News-Press reports that FHP and Lee County Sheriff's Office records show that a child said he needed "a cop and a firetruck" before the 911 call disconnected. The child's parents later told investigators that the child had been playing with an old cellphone and they didn't know it could still make 911 calls.
No charges are pending against the child or his parents.
The Steffens lived in Pandora, Ohio, and vacationed in Fort Myers.
