CLERMONT, Fla. -

The death of a Clermont man at a Lakeland shooting range is still under investigation, according to Polk County officials, who earlier provided incorrect information to the media.

Polk County deputies said originally that the death of 71-year-old Larry Simpson was the result of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. On Tuesday, however, Polk County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer retracted the information.

She said no conclusions in the investigation have been reached by the Polk County Sheriff's Office or the Medical Examiner’s Office as to whether the death was accidental.

Simpson was shot in the chest at the Tenoroc Shooting Sports and Training range in Lakeland. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  Authorities say Simpson was shooting clays with a friend when he was shot.

The Sheriff's Office said Jaime Gonzalez, of Orlando, told detectives that he heard a shot directly behind him, and he turned around to find Simpson wounded with his gun lying beside him.
