CLERMONT, Fla. -

Police are investigating after a hospital patient, who authorities say was being combative while awaiting transport to the sheriff's office, died at the hospital.

Clermont police officers responded to South Lake Hospital at 2 p.m. Friday in reference to a patient that was being combative with the hospital staff and security while awaiting the Lake County Sheriff's Office to arrive for transport.

Upon the officers' arrival, police said the patient had calmed down.

However, prior to being taken into the custody by the Sheriff's Office to be transported under the Baker Act laws, police said he again became combative with the officers and deputies at the scene. The man was restrained by the officers, deputies and medical staff.

Shortly after being restrained and prior to being taken into the custody of the Sheriff's Office, police said the man died.

Police said a preliminary investigation into the cause and manner of death is being conducted by the Clermont Police Department and the Medical Examiner's Office.
