Composite sketch released in fatal shooting at CrossFit gym

Winter Garden police search for man who shot Richard Millsap

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Winter Garden police on Wednesday released a composite sketch of a man wanted in the shooting death of a CrossFit instructor who was gunned down inside a gym while others training watched on in horror.

Richard Millsap, 33, was shot dead Monday evening at CrossFit Mosaic on Carter Road near State Road 429 in Winter Garden.

According to Winter Garden police Lt. Scott Allen, a man wearing a hat and sunglasses entered a fitness room at the gym and shot Millsap, who died at the scene.

Millsap's wife left a message on the gym's Facebook page, writing "this is very overwhelming but it's amazing to have such a community of support in Crossfit... For him, Crossfit meant "getting fit to carry the cross"... And he was perfect when God rested his soul."

Allen said eight people were training in the gym at the time of the shooting and one of them chased the shooter, who got into a waiting car.

"Whoever the killer was walked into the gym, said, 'Nobody move,' walked up to Richard and shot him dead," said Mosaic Community Church member Jerry Phillips. "Shot him twice and walked out and there was a getaway car, so it was an assassination."

Officials release a sketch of a man wanted in the shooting death of a CrossFit trainer.

Friends of Millsap say he remarried a few years ago and left behind more than one child. They told Local 6 that Millsap recently turned around his life and started going to church when he wasn't leading workouts at the gym.

A motive for the shooting is not known.

In 2007, Millsap was hanging out at NBA player DeShawn Stevenson's home when someone opened fire, wounding a man. Deputies said no one inside the house, including Millsap would cooperate with the investigation and no arrests were made.
