CLERMONT, Fla. - Clermont police are looking for a man who tried to steal a car with a child in the backseat.
Police said it happened at a Walgreens store at 4400 S. US 27.
Store surveillance video shows a woman walking into the store Tuesday morning. Police said she'd left her car running with her grandson, who's approximately 8 years old, sitting in the back seat.
Just 50 seconds later, the attempted car thief is seen running by the store's front doors, while the young boy is running behind him. He then alerts his grandmother and store employees that the man just tried to steal the car he was sitting in.
Clermont police think the thief had no idea the boy was in the backseat, who was hidden by the car's tinted windows.
"Simply, I think he was probably out just looking for a quick car," said Clermont police Lt. Michael McMaster.
McMaster said when the man opened the driver's side door, the boy started screaming and the suspect took off.
Police said they were able to recover fingerprints from the car, which are now being processed. They also said the man took off so fast, he literally ran out of his flip flops and left them at the scene. Those shoes have now been placed into evidence.
Local 6 knocked on the victim's door, who declined to comment on camera.
She and her grandson described the suspect as a white male, about 25 to 35 years old, 5 foot 5 inches to 5 foot 10 inches with a medium build. He also had dirty blond curly hair and a goatee.
Anyone with information, is asked to contact Clermont police.
