Cops: Child dies after falling off wakeboard in Banana River

Victim's identity won't be released

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - A child has died after falling off a wakeboard near Port Canaveral, according to Port Canaveral police.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. Friday near the 700 block of Scallop Drive in the area of "Ski Island" in the Banana River. The child was riding on the wakeboard and being pulled by a jetski.

The child, believed to be 4 years old, was taken to the Cape Canaveral Hospital on a trauma alert, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue officials. He died at the hospital, and police said they are investigating the boy's death as a drowning.

Investigators are interviewing the man who tried to save the child by performing CPR.

The identity of the victim won't be released pending the notification of out-of-state family members, police said.
