Cops: Woman slapped deputy to quit smoking
Suspect wanted to go to jail where cigarettes are banned, deputies say
A California woman said she wanted to quit smoking so bad that she came up with a rather illegal way to go cold turkey.
Investigators said Etta Lopez, 31, slapped a deputy in order to be arrested and taken to jail, where cigarettes are banned.
Investigators said Lopez confronted Sacramento County Deputy Matt Campoy on Wednesday as he left his shift at the jail.
"All of a sudden she stepped into me and slapped me in the face," Campoy said.
Campoy said Lopez slapped him to kick a habit.
"She told us that she needed to quit smoking," he said.
Deputies said Lopez admitted she sat in front of the jail for hours.
"She explained it with great detail as to why," Campoy said.
Her neighbors were shocked to learn Lopez had been arrested for allegedly hitting a deputy.
"There's easier ways to stop smoking besides hitting a cop," Roger Spearman said.
Lopez faces charges of assaulting a police officer.
