Volusia County man gets life for fatal shooting

Poindexter found guilty of 2nd-degree murder

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A Central Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting a woman after his friends were beaten in a fight.

A Volusia County judge sentenced 24-year-old Willie Poindexter on Tuesday. A jury found Poindexter guilty in June of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Poindexter fatally shot 24-year-old Katie Burson and wounded 24-year-old Lashanna Bates after some of his female friends lost a brawl with another group of women at a Daytona Beach gas station in August 2011. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that both groups had partied earlier in the evening at a nightclub where Poindexter worked as a bouncer.

Prosecutors say Poindexter fired a .22-caliber rifle that he owned into the group, but the weapon was never recovered.
