DES MOINES, Iowa -

A group of women are taking plastic bags and turning them into a reusable item all thanks to a YouTube video.

They call themselves the Mighty Mat Makers.

The women have collected thousands of plastic bags in order to crochet mats for people in need.

"The first time you tell somebody you crochet plastic bags, they kind-of give you a look," one woman said.

The group learned the craft from a video on YouTube. One of the mats can take up to 700 bags and 100 hours of teamwork.

Once completed, the mats are given to people in need. The plastic helps provide padding and a moisture barrier.

It's estimated that more than 1 trillion plastic bags are used every year worldwide.
