Customers flock to Daytona Beach Sports Authority

Company announces it's closing all stores

A steady stream of customers visited the Sports Authority store in Daytona Beach Monday morning.

A lot of folks tell News 6 that it's their first time to shop the store after it announced it's closing the doors for good.

Some customers said they've been loyal customers for a while.

"On and off for years," said James Hoover.

"Since high school," said Sebastian Rojas.

Others said they're trying something new.

"Just recently when they started closing," said Brock Hoover.

But all of them said they were on one mission.

"To clear out this store!" said Keith Gallo.

Sports Authority announced bankruptcy in March and officially decided to liquidate. That decision now has folks in Daytona Beach rushing to get the goods while they last.

"I'm hoping to find some good fishing stuff and hunting stuff on sale, but I'm a little too late," said James Hansen.

For Keith Gallo, he hoped to score on some after school sports gear.

"We have four kids, so we need a lot of stuff. We got baseball, we got kids in soccer, we got kids in every sport it seems," he said.

But they too, walked out empty-handed. Some customers said while they're disappointed to say goodbye to a once popular store, others are excited for what's yet to come.

"If I was being honest, I was thinking Bass Pro Shop," said Gallo.

Sports Authority told News 6, only 140 stores are closing and it's still too early to tell if the other 310 stores will follow suit. As for the Daytona Beach location, officials said the store will close within the next few weeks.
