Dad caused DUI crash while picking up children from school, deputies say

Suspect faces multiple charges

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was arrested at a Longwood elementary school after he crashed while picking up his three children drunk on Tuesday, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Steven Gallagher, 42, attempted to leave Sabal Point Elementary in his gold Nissan after the crash, but a deputy stopped him, the report said. Details of the crash were not available.

Deputies said Gallagher immediately told them that he had been drinking, that the crash was his fault, his license was suspended and that he should be taken to jail.

During the incident, Gallagher's eyes were watery and glassy, his speech was slurred and he could not keep his balance, the affidavit said.

Gallagher told deputies that his license was suspended on Oct. 31 because of a medical issue. He was placed under arrest on a charge of driving with a suspended license and taken to jail, where Gallagher failed a field sobriety test, the affidavit.

He refused to submit to a breath test, deputies said.

Gallagher was charged with attempted child neglect without great bodily harm, DUI and driving with a suspended license.
