Teen calls 911 after man choked, tried to stab her, police say

SWAT standoff sparked by aggravated battery report

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Beach Street was surrounded around 9 a.m. Thursday morning, with the SWAT team persuading what police called a suicidal 56-year-old Paul Christopher Anderson to come out of his apartment.

"Never had a problem with the neighbor. I've known him for six months," said Michael Wade.

Wade said his 15-year-old daughter skipped school and was at Anderson's apartment using the internet when an argument started. The teen told News 6 what happened next.

"I called him a pervert and he and he followed me up the stairs and he started choking me. I tried moving his arm but he had a knife, and so he cut my hand and tried to stab me," she said.

The teen ran home and called 911. Once police arrived, they said Anderson was armed with a knife and refused to leave his apartment. He also told police that he took several pills. It wasn't until they deployed tear gas, that he surrendered."

"He was trying to catch his breath. The gas got him and he decided to come out," said Chief Mike Chitwood.

Anderson was taken to the hospital and faces charges of child abuse and aggravated battery. Police said he has a criminal history of fraud and theft.

Chitwood told News 6 that the teen is the same girl who the former president of Keiser University tried to pick up for sex before getting carjacked in August of 2015.
