TITUSVILLE, Fla. - An elderly deaf woman is recovering from serious bite wounds after being mauled by a group of dogs that ran loose from a neighbor's house, said police.
Titusville Police said three dogs attacked the elderly woman as she was getting her mail Tuesday evening.
As police responded to the scene in the 4500 block of Apollo Road off Cheney Highway, they said the dogs circled them and lunged at officers.
The woman, who is in her 70s, was bitten up and down her legs and other parts of her body and was taken to the hospital with several serious bite marks.
Titusville Police Lieutenant Cleyton Bray said, the woman has "multiple injuries in multiple parts of her body, and she's getting treatment for those injuries now. Last I heard, she was in good spirits, but certainly in a lot of pain and a lot of discomfort."
Animal Control said one of the dogs is a black mouth cur, the other a labrador mix and the third is a pug.
Police said the pug was returned to its owner because it inflicted minimal damage, but one large dog was quickly captured and taken away by Animal Control.
For several hours, the third dog was still on the run in the neighborhood, but returned to its owner and was turned over to Animal Control late Tuesday night.
Animal Control cited the dogs' owners for an "attack causing severe injury" and fined them $1120 for the attack. Police said the owners will not face criminal charges.
