Deputies make arrest in Orange County Publix robbery

Man charged with robbery at Publix in Dr. Phillips, DeLand

DR. PHILLIPS, Fla. – Orange County deputies on Wednesday arrested a man in an armed robbery at a Publix in Dr. Phillips.

Cecil Buckner, 34, was arrested in the Sand Lake Road robbery, which occurred just before 10 p.m. March 16.

Buckner was charged with robbery after leaving his hat at the scene and giving DNA evidence linking him to the robberies, deputies said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said that charges in the Publix robberies on Feb. 28 in Winter Park and March 20 in DeLand are being handled by other police departments.

Deputies have also identified several others as persons of interest, but they don't have enough evidence to make arrests yet and they haven't released their names.

"There are two in the videos, but we know there's at least one getaway driver, and there may be a third or fourth individual beyond that," said Lt. Parks Duncan.

Buckner was arrested at a 7-Eleven at Westmoreland Drive and Colonial Drive. Deputies said he went by nine different aliases and has an extensive criminal history, serving years in prison for drug- and firearm-related charges.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings had a simple message for anyone considering a similar crime.

"Those that may be contemplating robbery in this community, I want them to understand we're going after them next," said Demings.

Deputies said a $10,000 reward from Crimeline is still available. They said they need more tips from the public, but also emphasized that they do expect more arrests soon.

A judge gave Buckner no bond on Thursday and he was ordered to stay away from Publix stores and cannot have guns.
