Deputies: Polk County teacher, boyfriend stole golf clubs from home

$2K golf clubs pawned for $180, deputies say

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – A Polk County elementary school teacher and her boyfriend were arrested by deputies after they say they stole $2,500 worth of golf clubs from a Winter Haven home.

Amy Alvarado, 42, a second-grade teacher at Eastside Elementary in Haines City drove her boyfriend 30-year-old Brian Difeau to Eagle Pond Drive in Winter Haven, where he stole a golf bag filled with clubs before driving away.

A neighbor saw the theft and reported it, according to deputies. Alvarado was pulled over by deputies and arrested them for the theft.

Alvarado told deputies that after stealing the clubs, they went to several pawn shops in an attempt to sell them, and eventually went to Play It Again Sports in Winter Haven. According to the release, she took the stolen clubs inside and sold them for $180, signing a form stating that she was the owner of the property.

Alvarado was arrested and charged with burglary to a dwelling, grand theft, dealing in stolen property and false verification to pawn brokers. Fideau was arrested and charged with burglary to a dwelling, grand theft, dealing in stolen property, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Alvarado's 22-year-old son who deputies say was in the car with a friend at the time of the burglary, was arrested arrested on drug possession charges.

Thanks to observant neighbors, we got the lead we needed to arrest these thieves. We strongly encourage residents to keep their garage doors closed and their property secured. Criminals are constantly looking for easy opportunities to steal; let's not make it easy for them," saidSheriff Grady Judd in a release.
