ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - Orange County Sheriff's Deputies are warning residents of what they call an alarming spike in car burglaries.
Some of the subdivisions recently targeted are Bay Ridge, North Bay, Torey Pines and Pembroke.
According to deputies, the burglaries are happening along a four-mile stretch from Sand Lake to Old Winter Garden Road.
In the past month, there have been 25 car burglaries in the area, the majority of them happening overnight.
Car windows are being broken and the common items that are being taken are cell phones, tablets and laptops.
"It's a significant cluster, if you will, in a small area," said Lt. Dom Galiano, with the Orange County Sheriff's Office. "We feel the need to get the message out to residents."
Deputies put up two electronic billboards telling people to lock and keep valuables out of their cars.
"As a community, we can all be alert and help one another and look out for one another," said Char Sibigs, who lives in North Bay. "Individually, they have to take responsibility and lock up, take things out of their car."
Deputies said so far they haven't received any surveillance video from any neighbors that show the crooks in action.
