Deputy accused in Disney car break-in faces more charges

Orange County deputy charged with 2 more car burglaries

ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orange County sheriff's deputy accused of breaking into a car at Walt Disney World while on duty has been charged in more car burglaries.

Deputy Kirk Smurawa, 40, was arrested at Disney's Hollywood Studios in May after undercover investigators said they recorded him on video breaking into a car and taking a purse with more than $100 in it.

Prosecutors have now charged Smurawa with burglarizing two more cars and stealing a credit card from one of them.  It's not known if the other cars were on Disney property.

Sheriff's officials initially recommended charges of armed burglary since Smurawa was carrying his agency-issued handgun, but prosecutors have decided not to seek greater penalties because of the weapon.

Smurawa, who's been with the Orange County Sheriff's Office since 2002 and is a former Marine, has been relieved of duty without pay and his law enforcement credentials have been revoked pending an administrative review.
