Disney drops controversial Dia De Los Muertos
The Walt Disney Company backs away from trademark bid
The Walt Disney Company is backing away from its bid to trademark “Dia de los Muertos” for an upcoming Pixar animated feature, days after receiving criticism for the move.
Dia de los Muertos, The Day Of The Dead, celebrates and honors loved ones who have passed.
The company applied for the trademark of the phrase "Dia de los Muertos" earlier this month. The trademark included toys, clothing, merchandise and edible goods.
The film is set to center around the Mexican holiday. But many critics are against it, especially online. Some even started a change petition on change.org.
Tuesday, Disney released this statement, "Disney's trademark filing was intended to protect any potential title for our film and related activities. It has since been determined that the title of the film will change and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing."
Disney has not decided on the movie's new name, and does not have a release date at this point.
