DeLAND, Fla. - A dog that had been dumped in the trash at a DeLand home was rescued by a neighbor, according to officials.
According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Animal Control told deputies that it received a call on Wednesday about a Chihuahua in a crate that had been dumped in the trash on Forest View Road.
When an Animal Control officer arrived at the home, however, the trash had already been picked up and no dog was found in the area, deputies said. Animal Control contacted Waste Management, which said its workers had not picked up a dog crate in the area.
The officer then discovered that a neighbor saw the dog in the trash and took it to her house, where she bathed it and gave the animal something to eat.
The dark gray Chihuahua was taken to Animal Control and checked for a microchip but none was found.
Officers talked to neighbors in the area, but no one recognized the animal.
Deputies did not say who lived at the home where the dog was discovered.
It's not known if the dog will be put up for adoption.
