Dog shot during attempted Tavares home break-in, police say

No arrests made

TAVARES, Fla. – A dog was shot Monday night when two people tried to kick down the door of a home near Mansfield Road in Tavares, police said.

The homeowner told News 6 he heard someone trying to break down his deadbolt-locked door. When he went with his dogs to investigate, someone shot at them and then ran away through a backyard field.

"I open the door and I look and there's no one there and I got outside with my dogs and I'm walking right along the corner here and I say, 'Get 'em,' and (the dogs) took off right by the gate," homeowner Russel Schrock said. "As soon as they went to the gate, I knew somebody was out there. So I started walking out and I heard a gun shot go off at us."

The dog suffered minor surface injuries from being grazed by the bullet, the homeowner said.

The Tavares Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Office searched the area but were unable to make any arrests.

Schrock put up a post on his Facebook in hopes that it would help lead authorities to the accused criminals.

"People need to know what's going on. You know what I mean? They need to be aware of what's going on in their neighborhoods," Schrock said.

He doesn't know who would want to target his home, but he hopes an arrest is made soon.

"(My children) couldn't go to sleep until three in the morning because they're afraid some bad man is going to shoot them," Schrock said.
