The first group of dogs rescued by a local shelter from Russia arrived in Central Florida on Tuesday night.
The ARNI Foundation paid to have 18 dogs sent from Russia to their shelter in Daytona Beach in hopes of finding new homes.
The dogs were first rescued by an British animal rights group working in Russia after it was discovered around 5,000 stray dogs were killed ahead of the recent Olympic games in Sochi.
The foundation says five of the dogs arrived on a flight Tuesday night. The other 13 dogs will be sent at a later date.
The dogs will be in quarantine for 30 days but after that will be up for adoption.
