ORLANDO, Fla. – Authorities are investigating why a worker at an Orlando day care with a suspended license was allowed to drive a van of children after she crashed into a tree and seriously injured one of the toddlers.
3-year-old DeAnthony Fisher was knocked unconscious while being driven by Tressa Cummings in the day care van to the Children's Place Learning Center on Pine Hills Road, according to the crash report.
Cummings had her license suspended back in May for failing to pay traffic fines, records show. She has also had her license suspended several other times and had numerous traffic violations, including failure to properly restrain a child in a safety seat.
Department of Children and Families is also investigating if the children were properly restrained in the van on Monday.
"I was sitting in my chair and I fell," Fisher told Local 6 on Friday. Fisher was taken to the hospital when he regained consciousness where he received stitches in his head.
His mother told Local 6 she bought a child safety seat and gave it to the daycare for them to use. But Fisher told Local 6 he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. He also told Local 6 he doesn't want to go back to day care again.
Cummings has been cited with careless driving and driving on a suspended license. She could face additional charges if investigators determine the type of van she was driving required passengers to be restrained.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Cummings told troopers there were car seats in the van, she claimed employees removed them just before troopers showed up.
