Driver who struck, killed 2 on Brevard causeway gets $169 fine

Vincent Worbington issued citation after 4-month investigation

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A distracted driver who hit three men fishing off an Eau Gallie Causeway bridge on April 1, killing two of the men, has been issued a citation alleging careless driving.

Melbourne police gave Vincent Worbington, 43, of West Melbourne, the citation after concluding a four-month investigation of the crash. As part of their investigation, officers reviewed toxicology test results and determined Worbington was not intoxicated at the time.

However, a crash report -– and the citation itself -- say Worbington was distracted because he was using a cellphone in some manner, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported. The citation says unspecified "road conditions" also contributed to the crash. Worbington was driving an SUV west over the bridge, which is just east of the causeway, about 11:45 p.m. on April 1 when he swerved into the north shoulder and hit three men.

Justin Mitchell and Garrett Viccaro were killed. Jeffrey Vanreenen was seriously injured but survived.

The citation carries a fine of $169 and requires Worbington to make an appearance in court. The appearance is scheduled for Sept. 9.
