Drivers prepare for Budweiser Duel at Daytona 500

Safety fence repaired after speedway crash during practice

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Drivers prepare for the Budweiser Duel on Thursday night at the Daytona International Speedway after a crash Wednesday night.

Crews worked to patch up the hole left in the fence after the crash at the speedway during practice runs Wednesday evening.

Officials said the catchfence did what it was supposed to do because despite the hole, no car parts made it into the stands and no fans were hurt.

The Budweiser Duel begins at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, defending Daytona 500 winner Jimmie Johnson says he won't be taking many chances in Thursday's qualifying race.

Johnson already wrecked one car in the exhibition Sprint Unlimited last week and really likes the Chevrolet his team has prepped and ready for "The Great American Race" on Sunday.

So Johnson was one of a handful of drivers who turned few laps in the two practice sessions Wednesday.

He says he doesn't want to risk wrecking his car, and Hendrick Motorsports having to call for the backup to be sent from North Carolina.
