Evacuations lifted at Winter Park Library after gas leak capped

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The evacuation of part of a Winter Park neighborhood and the main library has been lifted after a gas main break was capped.

Winter Park police say the gas line break, which was located just blocks from Rollins College, occurred just after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of the library and the closure of Aloma Avenue at New England Avenue.

Residents of two homes voluntarily left as a precaution.

Police said the city worker cut a 2.5 inch gas line of a metal pipe, sending natural gas pouring into the air.

It was capped just before 2 p.m.

Authorities had sealed off Interlachen Avenue and emergency crews were partially blocking off Aloma Avenue and Chase Avenue.

Chase Avenue will continue to be closed as construction continues on that street.

No one was injured.
