Facebook announced that iOS and Android users will soon need to download the Messenger app if they want to continue messaging friends on their phones through the social media site, according to Mashable.

Users can expect messages over the next few days urging them to download the app.

On Monday, Facebook alerted users through email that their current messages will soon disappear from the iPhone and Android apps.

Eventually, the Facebook app will only notify users of messages, but in order to read those messages, users will need to turn to the web or the Messenger app, according to Mashable.

Some users are not happy with being forced into downloading Messenger, although a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement the app is designed to offer a better messaging experience for users.
