Families displaced after apartment fire in Sanford

Firefighters believe fire may have been caused by lightning

SANFORD, Fla. – The Sanford Fire Department is investigating a fire that happened Sunday night at the Wyndham Crest Apartment Complex.

Firefighters believe it may have been lightning that caused the fire that started in the attic of one of the apartment buildings.

The fire left 12 families without homes due to the heavy water damage, including the Rodriguez family.

"All of a sudden this thing is in flames and I went across the street over there and I saw the flames," said Amelia Rodriguez. "It looked close to our apartment because we're all to wall with that apartment."

The fire happened in building eight and took crews an hour to get the fire completely contained. They even ripped off the roof of building eight to get to the fire below in the attic. Two cats and a lizard were also saved in the fire.

Sunday night, only half the building was allowed back inside their apartments.

Red Cross is helping the 12 families that were displaced because of the fire.
