COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Instead of bathing suits, Tuesday's beach attire consisted of sweaters, jeans and beanie caps following the polar vortex that brought most of the United States frigid temperatures.
"It's been -10 degrees at home and it's been crazy weather. There's been a lot of accidents, the roads, everything is shut down. So, it's nice here," said Scott Hobart.
Hobart and his family are visiting the central Florida area from Illinois. After a week-long stay at Disney, they thought it would be fitting to finish up their vacation with a trip to Cocoa Beach -- even if it meant they had to wear hoodies.
Hobart said, "They've had a foot and half of snow in the last week, so it's a lot better than being home."
It was the same story for Missouri resident Avery Henry and her family -- who are visiting friends in the Orlando area.
She says Tuesday's chilly, mid-40s temperatures couldn't keep her away from checking out the Cocoa Beach Pier.
"In Branson it's like -2 degrees right now. So, this is kind of like sweater weather," said Henry.
Some of the businesses were closed Tuesday at the Cocoa Beach Pier, but they should be back open by this weekend when central Florida gets back to Florida-like temperatures.
