Family, friends, officers gather to say goodbye to Lt. Debra Clayton

Orlando community in mourning over loss of officer

ORLANDO, Fla. – Family, friends and fellow law enforcement officers came together Saturday to say goodbye to Lt. Debra Clayton.

Clayton was on the force for 17 years and in that time, she accomplished a great deal, both as an officer and a member of the community.

"Debra would buy washing machines, food, clothing and even look for housing for those who didn't have it. She would clean houses for seniors and mentored and raised other peoples children," U.S. Representative-elect and former Orlando Police Chief Val Demings said.

Clayton was also a good friend to many and would do anything for those she loved.

"One of the best things about being Debra's friend is that she made everyone around her a better person," Tammy Hughes said. "It's impossible to put into words what her friendship meant and how much she meant to me."

Police Chief John Mina shared a similar sentiment.

"As I think about Debra, what comes to mind is her amazing smile, her joyful personality, her signature pink nails, her natural ability to see the best in people and her boundless optimism," he said.

After the ceremony, Clayton was escorted to Woodlawn Cemetery, where she was greeted by hundreds of brothers and sisters in blue. They stood guard as the final 10-7 message was called out over the speakers.
