Family gathers to watch as FDOT crews move memorial signs at site of deadly crash

Memorial signs remembering 4 victims now face toward traffic

DeLAND, Fla. – Albert Shoemaker and his family came out Saturday to the intersection where two of his granddaughters, their cousin and grandmother were killed last year.

He was anxious about the visit, knowing the memorial signs that sat there would be torn down and relocated.

"The memorial signs, you know, you look at it and think it's not much," he said.

The signs aren't going very far and are actually being turned around to face the street, where the newly built roundabout now sits.

The Florida Department of Transportation had to keep the signs off to the side while workers finished the construction.

The signs are simple and provide the name of each victim. They also remind drivers to "drive safely," something Shoemaker said is so important.

"This intersection was incredibly dangerous, and if this saves one person's life and stops their family from going through what we went through, it's worth it," he said.

The one-year anniversary of the deadly crash is April 5. A memorial service will be held at the site.
