Family sues over dog's death

Schutts family says police officer shot, killed dog

OCOEE, Fla. – An Ocoee family is suing Orange County, the City of Ocoee and an Ocoee police officer after their dog was shot and killed.

Local 6 first told viewers about the family's loss in September shortly after a Boxer, named Laila, was killed.

According to the lawsuit, Ocoee police officer Jeremy Lewis knocked on Mitch and Jackie Schutt's front door for an unrelated incident.

The Schutts claim Laila ran out to the front lawn when they opened their door.

Jackie Schutt said she grabbed the dog, but the officer opened fire, hitting Laila three times.

The suit alleges one bullet ricocheted off their front door, nearly striking their two young children.

The Schutts are suing for an unspecified amount of damages and attorneys fees.
