ORLANDO, Fla. -

The FBI continues to investigate a day after a Chechen immigrant, who shares a similar background to that of one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, was shot to death in Orlando during questioning with an FBI agent that turned violent.

Ibragim Todashev, 27, whose Chechen roots and mixed martial arts background mirror that of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston bombing suspect killed in a shootout with police last month, was shot and killed at the Windhover Apartments near Universal Orlando.  The two also had lived in the Boston area.

Todashev was fatally shot during a meeting with the FBI agent, two Massachusetts state troopers and other law enforcement officers.

Officials initially said Todashev lunged at the agent with a knife.  However, they later said it wasn't clear if he lunged at him.

"There's no way he would do it. I know this guy. This is the last thing he would do is attack them, you know what I mean. There's no way," a friend said.

Two officials briefed on the investigation say Todashev had implicated himself as being involved in a 2011 triple-slaying in a Boston suburb that authorities believe may have been connected to Tsarnaev.  A source told CNN that Todashev named Tsarnaev as the killer.

No one was ever charged in the gruesome triple-slaying in which the victims were nearly decapitated and found covered in cash and marijuana.

Friends of Todashev said the FBI had been tailing him for a while.

One friend, who said he was also questioned by the FBI, told Local 6 that the triple-slaying was never brought up.

"This triple-murder, it's the first time we (are hearing about it)," he said.

Friends also told Local 6 late Wednesday that Todashev's wife drove to Orlando from Georgia, and the FBI will likely interview her.

Todashev was arrested in Orlando earlier this month on suspicion of attacking a man over a parking spot at an outlet mall.

"He was crazy and he was trained. He was trained, and he knows where to hit," the victim said.

The brother of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was arrested in connection with the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing, which left three people dead and wounded 275.
