Father shot after son robbed of cellphone, Orange County deputies say

Father hospitalized after confronting people who robbed his son

ORLANDO, Fla. – Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff's Office are looking for the people involved in a shooting that happened at the intersection of Lancaster and Winegard roads Friday evening.

Deputies said it started at 2:30 p.m. Friday when a 15-year-old boy was pistol-whipped and robbed of his cellphone while walking home from school on Lancaster Road near Lee Lan Road.

A few hours later, several people called 911 to report a shooting at the intersection a block away. Investigators have determined the 15-year-old's father was shot when he confronted the people who robbed his son.

That man was dropped off at a nearby fire station and rushed to ORMC. Deputies said he is in stable condition following surgery and they are waiting to talk with him.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office gang unit was at a home on Lee Lan Road until late Friday night. That's where they found an SUV that had a bullet hole in it.

Investigators had the SUV towed and are trying to determine if and how it may be connected to the shooting that sent one man to the hospital.

"Right now we have our gang unit on scene who is doing follow up investigation in reference to the initial robbery along with this latest shooting," said Lt. Paul Hopkins with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Hopkins said the 15-year-old boy suffered minor injuries when he was pistol-whipped. No one has been arrested.
