Federal judge rules to allow Gay-Straight Alliance club at Lake Co. school
Ruling not final word on if Lake County Schools will allow club in 2013-2014 school year
A federal judge ruled on Thursday to allow a Gay-Straight Alliance club at a Lake County middle school.
The judge ruled the club, which was fought to be allowed by 14-year-old Bayli Silberstein, should be approved at Carver Middle School.
The judge ordered the district to pay $14,000 in legal fees and a settlement to Bayli of $1.
But the ruling isn't the final word on if the club will continue, as the Lake County School Board considers the rules for in the 2013-2014 school year.
The school board allowed the club to meet for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year but it's not clear if the club will return next year.
The American Civil Liberties Union, which supported Bayli's fight for the club at her school, tells Local 6 they are monitoring the situation to see what will happen next year.
