FHP: Man dead after striking pole, crashing vehicle into Groveland pond

GROVELAND, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol said a man died Wednesday night when his vehicle went into a pond at County Road 48 and North Austin Merritt Road.

Troopers said the 73-year-old man was driving south on County Road 48 when for an unknown reason he traveled off the road and struck a power pole. He then traveled into a pond, where his 1998 Mercury was partially submerged.

According to the FHP, some good Samaritans went into the water and helped the man out of the vehicle and back to shore.

Troopers said as the man was sitting on the ground talking to the people who helped him, he suddenly fell unconscious and died.

The crash continues to be investigated by the FHP.
