FHP: Man speeding in neighborhood crashes, 1 killed

Passenger of speeding car flees after fatal accident

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that killed a man early Saturday morning.

The accident happened around 3:50 a.m. Saturday on 37th Street near Tampa Avenue.

Troopers said the driver, who has not been identified, was driving a Lexus and speeding through the neighborhood.

The driver did not see a sign that indicated the road had ended, forcing him to drive through a chain-linked fence on the back side of a basketball court at House of Hope, troopers said.

The car hit a heavy gauge pole and flipped. Troopers said the driver died at the scene and the passenger ran away from the accident.

Orange County deputies assisted with their helicopter and police dogs to find the passenger, but no one was found.

Troopers said there were inconsistencies with the accident scene.
