Fire erupts on barge after fireworks show

Firefighters struggle to extinguish flames

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Daytona Beach Fire Department responded to the Daytona Beach City Island Library for a reported boat fire just before 10 p.m. Friday.

Officials said when fire crews arrived on scene a barge floating in the Halifax River behind the library between Magnolia Street and City Island Parkway, was fully involved with fire.

Firefighters utilize the Daytona Beach Police Department Marine unit to make an attack on the fire, however, shallow water and some mechanical difficulties prevented the firefighters from putting the fire completely out, officials said.

Firefighters were able to attack the remaining body of fire from the shoreline once the rivers current forced the barge to beach itself close enough to shore for fire attack lines to extinguish the fire, officials said.

The State Fire Marshal's Office will be handling the investigation into the cause of the fire.

No injuries were reported on scene and it is unclear what the lost dollar amount would be.

The United States Coast Guard was notified of the incident but due to the shallow depth of the Halifax River, they were unable to assist in the firefighting efforts.
