Fire rips through DeLand home

Volusia fire officials say home unoccupied, homeowner sought

DeLAND, Fla. – Volusia County authorities are investigating a fire that ignited at a DeLand home on Friday morning.

The blaze was reported at a home on East Mercers Fernery Road just before 2:30 a.m.

DeLand fire officials and Volusia County fire officials said when they arrived at the home the fire was so intense that the back half of the home collapsed within minutes.

Officials believed someone may have been trapped in the house at first, but after a search through the home no one was found inside.

Neighbors told authorities they saw the homeowner leave Thursday afternoon and haven't seen him ever since.

It's not clear how the fire started.
