Fla. Senate OKs bill to allow wine kegs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Wine kegs would be available in Florida for the first time under a bill that has cleared the Legislature.

The bill (HB 623) won final passage from the Senate on a 36-0 vote Thursday. It now goes to Gov. Rick Scott.

The measure cleared the House on a 116-0 vote last month.

The bill would legalize wine barrels that hold just more than five gallons. Currently wine can't be sold in containers larger than one gallon.

The idea is to help reduce costs for restaurants and bars that serve wine by the glass. The kegs use an inert gas that preserves wine and prevents the spoilage that often befalls corked bottles, which need to be consumed more quickly.
