PALM BAY, Fla. – On a weekend when most Americans were taking time to honor the nation's veterans with parades, tributes and patriotic displays, Thomas Moore, a 62-year-old Navy veteran found himself facing what was a distasteful display just yards away from his southwest Palm Bay home.
There, hoisted on a neighbor's flagpole was Old Glory flapping in the morning breeze -- only the display was upside down.

"I don't know why he's doing it, but as a veteran, it's discouraging to see something like that. I'd like to know why," said Moore, who lives along the 1400 block of Hancomb Road in the southwest section of Pam Bay.
Palm Bay police were called about the flag -- which when flown upside down traditionally means a distress call -- but told Moore and his wife little could be done about the neighbors display, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
In the yard near the flag pole is at least one Mitt Romney for president campaign sign, although it is unclear if the neighbor is making a point about the presidential outcome. The resident could not be reached for comment.
There have been sporadic reports of people flying the Stars and Stripes upside down from Texas to Florida following the re-election of President Obama last week.
In Fleming Island, a Marine veteran hoisted the flag upside down in front of his home. Another Fleming Island resident, a Navy vet, did the same.
In West Virginia, customers hungry for hamburgers were met at a Follansbee McDonald's franchise with an upside down American flag hoisted only at half–staff, although the business owner later said that the flag's positioning was a mistake, according to media accounts.

"Without a doubt, I know it's his right. That why we went to war, to protect his right to freedom of speech," Moore said, adding that the flag should transcend political division. "But to do it on Veterans Day is disrespectful to veterans."
