Florida gas station clerk shoots at masked gunman

Cocoa police say it's not known if culprit was struck

COCOA, Fla. – A Cocoa gas station clerk turned the tables on a masked gunman trying to rob the store by firing his own gun, possibly striking the man, who ran away.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Chevron at 6 S. Cocoa Boulevard.

According to Cocoa police, a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a black semiautomatic pistol ran into the store, went behind the counter and pointed the gun at the clerk, saying, "Give me money, give me money." 

Police said the clerk was in fear of his life and pulled out his own handgun, firing at the masked man.

The clerk said he thought he struck the man, who ran from the store, according to Cocoa police. 

It's not know if the culprit as shot.  Police believe he may have run to a waiting vehicle, but no other details were known.

Cocoa police described the assailant only as a black man about 5 feet 9 inches tall.
