Florida Highway Patrol trooper injured while escorting colleague's body

Man taken to hospital in The Villages

LADY LAKE, Fla. – A Florida Highway Patrol motorcycle trooper was struck and injured by a car in Central Florida while assisting in transporting the body of a trooper who was hit and killed over the weekend.

Trooper Kevin Brown, 45, of Orlando, was hurt around noon Monday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and Lemon Street in Lake County, FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes said.

The FHP said Mamdouh Zeini, 66, of Lady Lake, was driving a Mercedes eastbound on Lemon Street and failed to stop, even though a trooper was in the middle of the intersection allowing a procession to go through.

Zeini's car struck Brown's motorcycle, ejecting him, said the FHP.  Brown was taken to a hospital in The Villages with minor injuries.

Zeini was ticketed for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Brown was part of the processional escorting the body of Chelsea Richard, who was killed Saturday afternoon in Marion County, from the medical examiner's office to a funeral home in Ocala.  Richards was struck by a pickup truck while investigating another crash on Interstate 75.

A visitation for Trooper Richard is planned for Wednesday from 5pm-7pm. Her funeral will be Thursday at 2pm at the First Baptist Church of Ocala. Richard's family is asking for privacy but says flowers can be sent to the church.
